Letter from the Chair

The Children’s Hospital at Downstate

There have been some important advances at Downstate that have enhanced our leadership role in clinical and academic pediatrics.

  1. New inpatient treatment room (Starlight Foundation/Dunkin Donuts Foundation), opened April, 2015
  2. Construction of State of the Art Pediatric ICU and Step-Down Unit (completion winter, 2015)
  3. Drs. Velcek and Jongco form pediatric surgical team at the Children’s Hospital at Downstate
  4. Recertification as a NY State Regional Perinatal Center
  5. $4 million NIH research award to the Division of Neonatology

We offer the most extensive array of pediatric medical and surgical services available in Brooklyn, providing the latest, most sophisticated medical care for children with both acute and chronic medical/surgical problems.  In short, we are the pediatric faculty of Brooklyn’s only medical school and we set the standard for pediatric healthcare in our region.  In 2009, the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI) certified our facility as a children’s hospital within a hospital.  Similarly, the NY State Department of Health has again renewed our certification as a Regional Perinatal Center, highlighting the world class care we provide for premature infants.

Our faculty members are recognized nationally and internationally as clinicians and educators.  The pediatric residency training program and all subspecialty training programs are fully accredited.  While the principal site for residency training is the Children’s Hospital at Downstate, we continue to provide unique educational experiences through our key affiliates, Kings County Hospital Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

The Children’s Hospital at Downstate and its faculty are active in cutting edge clinical and basic research.  In 2011, we were awarded a $4 million grant from the NIH to study the molecular basis of retinopathy of prematurity, as well as potential strategies for pharmacologic intervention.  The principal investigator is Jacob Aranda, MD, PhD, Director of Neonatology at Downstate.

2015 UPDATE:

In 2014, we received a grant from the Starlight Children’s Foundation and the Dunkin Donuts Foundation to completely remodel our in-patient treatment room.  The new facility was opened in April, 2015.  The luncheon and ribbon-cutting event was attended by leadership from both Foundations, local Dunkin Donuts franchisees and Corporate executives, including the President of the Dunkin Donuts Corporation for North America, Paul Twohig.

In early 2015, we began construction on a complete renovation of the Pediatric ICU and Step-Down units.  Our state of the art facility will feature  large, spacious rooms for each patient and all-new, updated equipment in more than twice the current space. Completion is expected this winter.

Dr. Francisca Velcek, Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics, and Dr. Bienvenido Jongco, Assistant Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics, have formed the new team for all Pediatric General Surgery at the Children’s Hospital at Downstate.   For routine appointments, call 718 270-1386.

Our pediatric sleep center continues to operate at the original location.  We are preparing to add a sleep study facility inside University Hospital of Brooklyn as well.
